Don Ohl

Donald Jay Ohl (April 18, 1936 – December 2, 2024) was an American professional basketball player who spent ten seasons (1960–1970) as a guard in the National Basketball Association. Born in Murphysboro, a rural town in southern Illinois, to Elmer R. and Blanche E. (Brendel) Ohl, he lived in Peoria, Illinois, and Iowa before his family settled in Edwardsville, Illinois, when he was ten years old.

Ohl attended Edwardsville High School, where he played basketball, baseball and golf and excelled academically. In his senior season of 1953–1954 he averaged 19.6 points per game and led his team to a fourth-place finish in the Illinois state basketball tournament. He made All-Southwestern Conference as a junior and senior, and was named first-team All-District and first-team All-State as a senior, earning a place on the state championship tournament's all-tournament team. He also received Edwardsville's Warnock Trophy as the senior athlete with the highest scholastic average and was named Prep Player of the Year.

He went on to play college basketball for the Illinois Fighting Illini. Across his decade in the NBA, Ohl was selected to five consecutive All-Star Games from 1963 through 1967.
