Doug Harvey

Douglas Norman Harvey (December 19, 1924 – December 26, 1989) was a Canadian professional hockey defenceman who is widely regarded as one of the greatest defenders in National Hockey League history. Born and raised in Montreal, Harvey played junior hockey for local teams and was a standout all-around athlete who also played Canadian football. During the Second World War he joined the Royal Canadian Navy, spending most of his service with the naval hockey team while also seeing active duty defending merchant shipping.

Harvey played in the NHL from 1947 to 1964 and again from 1966 to 1969. He is best known for his years with the Montreal Canadiens, and also played for the New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings, and St. Louis Blues, along with several minor-league clubs. He served as player-coach of the Rangers for one season and filled a similar role with the minor-league Kansas City Blues, and later worked as a coach.

Over his career Harvey won the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the league's best defenceman seven times and was named a First Team All-Star ten times. He was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1973 and in 2017 was named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in history.
