E.J. Holub

Emil Joseph Holub (January 5, 1938 – September 21, 2019) was an American professional football center and linebacker in the American Football League and the National Football League, playing for the Dallas Texans, who later became the Kansas City Chiefs. Born in Schulenburg, Texas, he played college football at Texas Technological College, now Texas Tech University.

Holub graduated from Lubbock High School in 1957, where he was nicknamed "the Beast." He lettered in football, playing tackle, and in track and field, competing in the shot put and discus and anchoring the sprint relay team. He earned All-District honors as a junior and was named team captain as a senior, though a knee operation forced him to miss his final season. The surgery took place over the summer of 1956; he attempted to play an early September game but re-injured the knee and stopped competing that year on medical advice.

He accepted a football scholarship from Texas Technological College. Holub was inducted into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame in 1987 and the Lubbock Independent School District Athletics Hall of Honor in 2011.
