Earl Francis Lloyd (April 3, 1928 – February 26, 2015) was an American professional basketball player and coach who became the first African American to play in an NBA game. Lloyd played college basketball at West Virginia State University, where he was an All-American and helped lead the Yellow Jackets to an undefeated season in 1948. As a professional, he contributed to the Syracuse Nationals' 1955 NBA Championship. In 1971, he was hired as head coach of the Detroit Pistons, becoming the first non-playing Black head coach in NBA history. Lloyd was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003.
