Ed Flanagan

Edward Joseph Flanagan (February 23, 1944 – May 10, 2023) was an American professional football player who played center in the National Football League. Born in San Bernardino, California, Flanagan moved with his family to Altoona, Pennsylvania, where he played for coach Earl Strohm at Altoona High School. He was not a star in high school and did not become a starter until his senior year.

Flanagan played college football at Purdue University from 1962 to 1964, growing from 190 to 230 pounds between his freshman and sophomore years. During his sophomore and junior seasons he played center on offense and linebacker on defense. As a senior, he was the starting center for the 1964 Boilermakers team that featured quarterback Bob Griese.

He entered the NFL in 1965 with the Detroit Lions, playing there through 1974, and finished his career with the San Diego Chargers from 1975 to 1976. Over his professional career he was selected to four Pro Bowls. After retiring as a player, Flanagan worked as a football coach.

In 1987 he was inducted into the Blair County Sports Hall of Fame. Flanagan died on May 10, 2023.
