Eddie Plank

Edward Stewart "Gettysburg Eddie" Plank (1875–1926) lived and died in his Pennsylvania hometown but built his career on the mound for the Philadelphia Athletics. Born August 31, 1875 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, he debuted in 1901 and pitched seventeen seasons through 1917 — his entire career, MLB and pro, in those same years. In 1911 he went 23–8 with a 2.10 ERA as a member of the World Series champion Athletics; over his full career he became the only left-handed 300-game winner of the dead-ball era. A 175-pound left-handed thrower and hitter, Plank appears in T206 White Border and T204 Ramly tobacco issues, plus E90-1 American Caramel, E93 Standard Caramel, E95 Philadelphia Caramel, and the E125 American Caramel Die Cuts. He died February 24, 1926 in Gettysburg and is buried at Section X, Lot 219, Grave 1 of Evergreen Cemetery in the same town where he was born. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1946.
