Eddie Shack

Edward Steven Phillip Shack (February 11, 1937 – July 25, 2020) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player who competed in the National Hockey League from 1959 to 1975. Known by the nicknames "the Entertainer" and "the Nose," he was of Ukrainian descent and played for six NHL teams over his career.

Shack was born in Sudbury, Ontario, the son of Ukrainian immigrants Lena and Bill Shack, and had an elder sister named Mary. Illnesses between first and third grade hampered his school attendance, and he remained illiterate and eventually dropped out. He worked as a salesman for a butcher shop before leaving to try out with the Guelph Biltmores hockey club, supporting himself during that period with jobs at a meat market and on a coal truck.

He spent eight and a half seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs, the longest tenure of his NHL career, and won the Stanley Cup with them in 1962, 1963, 1964, and 1967. Across his playing days he suited up for six different NHL franchises before retiring in 1975.

Shack met his wife, Norma Givens, when she worked at the Eaton's across from the Empress Hotel in Peterborough, Ontario, where his team held its training camps. The couple married in 1962 and had two children.
