Elliott Maddox was born December 21, 1947, in East Orange, New Jersey, and grew up in Vauxhall. After graduating from Union High School in Union County, he was selected by the Houston Astros in the fourth round of the 1966 draft but chose to attend the University of Michigan instead. As a sophomore in 1968, he won the Big Ten batting title with a .467 batting average, which earned him a first-round selection (20th pick) by the Detroit Tigers in the secondary phase of the June 1968 draft. Maddox made his major league debut in 1970 at age 22 and converted to Judaism during the 1970s.
