Enos Slaughter

Enos Bradsher Slaughter (April 27, 1916 – August 12, 2002), nicknamed "Country," was an American professional baseball right fielder. Born in Roxboro, North Carolina, where he earned his nickname, he was signed for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1935 by scout Billy Southworth. His first professional team was the Martinsville Manufacturers that same year. While a minor leaguer in Columbus, Georgia, he once jogged in from his outfield position and slowed to a walk near the infield, prompting manager Eddie Dyer to tell him, "Son, if you're tired, we'll try to get you some help." For the rest of his major-league career, Slaughter ran everywhere he went on a baseball field.

He played 19 seasons in Major League Baseball from 1938 to 1959, suiting up for the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Yankees, Kansas City Athletics, and Milwaukee Braves. He is best known for scoring the winning run in Game 7 of the 1946 World Series for the Cardinals. A ten-time All-Star, Slaughter was later elected to both the National Baseball Hall of Fame and the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame.
