Dossier

Ernest Grady Shore (1891–1980) was a right-handed pitcher who played in Major League Baseball from 1912 to 1920. Born near East Bend, North Carolina, he attended Guilford College before earning a brief trial with the New York Giants in 1912. The Boston Red Sox purchased him in 1914, and he contributed to their World Series championships in 1915 and 1916. On June 23, 1917, Shore pitched a combined no-hitter with Babe Ruth. Military service cost him the 1918 season, and a subsequent arm injury curtailed his effectiveness after a trade to the New York Yankees. He retired following the 1921 minor league season.
