Dossier

Felipe Rojas Alou (born May 12, 1935) is a Dominican former professional outfielder, first baseman, coach, and manager in Major League Baseball. The first Dominican to play regularly in the major leagues, he was the most prominent member of one of the sport's most notable families of the late 20th century. He was the oldest of a trio of baseball-playing brothers that included Matty and Jesús, both primarily outfielders, and his son Moisés was also primarily an outfielder; all but Jesús were named All-Stars at least twice. His son Luis later managed the New York Mets.

Over a 17-year playing career, Alou appeared with the Giants, the Milwaukee and Atlanta Braves, the Oakland Athletics, the New York Yankees, the Montreal Expos, and the Milwaukee Brewers. He played all three outfield positions regularly, logging 736 games in right field, 483 in center, and 433 in left. He led the National League twice in hits and once in runs. Batting regularly in the leadoff spot, he hit a home run to begin a game on 20 occasions.

Alou later turned to managing, leading the Montreal Expos from 1992 to 2001 and becoming the most successful manager in the franchise's history. He returned to the dugout with the San Francisco Giants, whom he managed from 2003 to 2006.
