Dossier

Frank Oliver Howard (August 8, 1936 – October 30, 2023) was an American professional baseball player, coach, and manager in Major League Baseball who spent most of his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Washington Senators/Texas Rangers franchises. Nicknamed "Hondo," "the Washington Monument," and "the Capital Punisher," Howard was among the most physically imposing players of his era, standing 6 feet 7 inches and weighing between 275 and 295 pounds according to former Senators/Rangers trainer Bill Zeigler.

Born in Columbus, Ohio, on August 8, 1936, Howard was the third of six children of John and Erma Howard. His father worked as a machinist for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway and had played semi-professional baseball, encouraging his son's early interest in the game.

Howard was named the National League's Rookie of the Year in 1960 with the Dodgers. He twice led the American League in home runs and total bases, and once each in slugging percentage, runs batted in, and walks. A four-time MLB All-Star, he hit 382 career home runs. Following his retirement, Howard was inducted into the Washington Nationals Ring of Honor.
