Dossier

Freddie Alton Carr (August 19, 1946 – February 19, 2018) was an American professional football player who played linebacker for the Green Bay Packers of the National Football League from 1968 to 1977. He attended Phoenix Union High School, where he also competed in basketball and track, throwing the discus and shot put for P.U.H.S. and ranking among the top ten discus throwers in the United States during his senior year. He played for Phoenix College before transferring to the University of Texas at El Paso in 1965, where he was described as probably the best overall linebacker in school history. The Green Bay Packers selected Carr fifth overall in the 1968 NFL/AFL draft. The Packers had obtained that draft slot through the previous year's trade with New Orleans that sent longtime fullback Jim Taylor to the Saints. The selection surprised some observers, as the Packers already had a strong linebacking corps led by Ray Nitschke and Dave Robinson. Carr spent his entire ten-year NFL career with Green Bay, playing through the 1977 season. He was inducted into the UTEP Athletics Hall of Fame on September 23, 2005, and was later elected to the Phoenix College (PCAA) Hall of Fame as part of its inaugural class in 2007.
