Fred Carter

Fredrick James Carter, born February 14, 1945, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is an American former professional basketball player and coach who played eight seasons in the National Basketball Association from 1969 to 1977. Nicknamed "Mad Dog" or "Doggy," he played for the Baltimore Bullets, the Philadelphia 76ers, and the Milwaukee Bucks.

One of four children, Carter was raised by a father who worked as a junk dealer and a mother who worked as a domestic worker. He attended Benjamin Franklin High School, where he played center and earned All-Public League honors in Philadelphia as a senior, averaging 17 points per game. He had decided to drop out and join the Army, but no one was available to swear him in. After accompanying a girlfriend to her freshman orientation at Cheyney University, he concluded that he could compete at the college level and chose to finish high school.

Carter was recruited to Mount St. Mary's College by fellow Philadelphian Jim Phelan, a College Basketball Hall of Fame coach. After his playing career, Carter returned to Mount St. Mary's as a coach, leading the women's basketball team for three seasons to a 60–32 record and three years of AIAW tournament play.
