Fred Clarke Phila. NL

Fred Clifford Clarke (1872–1960) appears here in the E90-1 American Caramel issue, a card whose "Phila. NL" reverse is a deadball-era misattribution — Clarke spent his career not in Philadelphia but as the player-manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he served from 1900 through 1915. The American Caramel set, issued from 1909 through 1911 in Philadelphia by the candy company of the same name, is dotted with such mix-ups; for collectors the variant adds rather than subtracts from the appeal. Born October 3, 1872 in Winterset, Iowa, the left-handed-hitting outfielder who threw right debuted with Louisville in 1894 and moved with the franchise to Pittsburgh in 1900. He took the Pirates to four pennants and won the 1909 World Series over Detroit, batting .265 across twenty-one seasons with 2,672 hits. He retired to a Kansas ranch when his career ended in 1915. He died August 14, 1960 in Winfield, Kansas and is buried at Greenlawn Cemetery there. The Hall of Fame elected him in 1945.
