Fred Schaus

Frederick Appleton Schaus (June 30, 1925 – February 10, 2010) was born in Newark, Ohio and played basketball at West Virginia University, where he became the first player to score 1,000 career points and earned All-American honors in 1949. He joined the Fort Wayne Pistons in 1949–50, averaging 14.3 points per game, and reached a career-best 15.3 points per game the following season. He was selected to the inaugural NBA All-Star Game, scoring eight points for the West. Later he served as head coach and athletic director at West Virginia, head coach at Purdue, and general manager and head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers.
