Fred Stanfield

Frederic William Stanfield (May 4, 1944 – September 13, 2021) was a Canadian professional ice hockey centre who played fourteen seasons in the National Hockey League from 1964 until 1978. Born in Toronto, he was one of seven brothers, most of whom went on to play professional hockey. As was the practice at the time, Stanfield was signed by the Chicago Black Hawks at age sixteen, as were his brothers Jim and Jack, and assigned to the St. Catharines Teepees, later renamed the St. Catharines Black Hawks, the club's Ontario Hockey Association affiliate. He played three seasons at St. Catharines alongside future NHL players including Phil Esposito, Ken Hodge, Roger Crozier, Chico Maki, Dennis Hull and Poul Popiel. He led the team in scoring in each of his final two seasons, and in 1964 finished third in the league with 109 points, earning the Max Kaminsky Trophy. In the NHL he won two Stanley Cups with the Boston Bruins, in 1970 and 1972. Stanfield was regarded as a clean player, exceeding fourteen penalty minutes in only one season across his entire professional career. He died on September 13, 2021.
