Fred Dwight Whitfield (January 7, 1938 – January 31, 2013) was an American professional baseball player who appeared in the Major Leagues from 1962 to 1970. A left-handed hitting and throwing first baseman, Whitfield played primarily for the Cleveland Indians and also saw time with the St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds, and Montreal Expos. Known by the nickname "Wingy" for his distinctive throwing motion, he stood 6 feet 1 inch and weighed 190 pounds. Born in Vandiver, Alabama, he attended Woodlawn High School in Birmingham before signing with the Cardinals as an amateur free agent in 1956.
