Gabby Hartnett

Charles Leo "Gabby" Hartnett, also nicknamed "Old Tomato Face," was an American professional baseball player and manager who lived from December 20, 1900 to December 20, 1972. A catcher, he spent almost his entire Major League Baseball career with the Chicago Cubs, playing from 1922 to 1940, before serving as a player-coach with the New York Giants in his final season in 1941. After his playing days, he remained in baseball as a coach and as a minor league manager.

Hartnett was an all-around player who performed well both offensively and defensively. Known for his strong and accurate throwing arm, he routinely led the National League's catchers in caught stealing percentage, and he was the first major league catcher to hit more than 20 home runs in a season.

Over the course of his career, Hartnett took part in several memorable events in Major League Baseball history. He was behind the plate for Babe Ruth's alleged called shot during the 1932 World Series, for Carl Hubbell's strikeout performance in the 1934 All-Star Game, and for Dizzy Dean's career-altering injury during the 1937 All-Star Game.
