Dossier

Garry Robert Charles Howatt (born September 26, 1952) is a Canadian former ice hockey forward who played in the National Hockey League from 1972 to 1984. Born in Grand Centre (now part of Cold Lake), Alberta, he was nicknamed the "Toy Tiger" for the toughness he brought despite his small size.

Howatt played one junior season in the WCHL with the Flin Flon Bombers in 1971–72, recording 79 points in 60 games. The New York Islanders drafted him at the 1972 NHL Amateur Draft. He spent the following season with the New Haven Nighthawks of the American Hockey League, scoring 49 points in 65 games.

Howatt began his NHL career with the New York Islanders in 1972, joining the franchise in its first season. He remained with the club through its formative years of steady improvement and won the Stanley Cup with the Islanders in both 1980 and 1981. Along with teammate Bobby Nystrom, he was known as a member of the team's tough core. He enjoyed his greatest popularity during his time on Long Island. Over his NHL career he also played for the Hartford Whalers and the New Jersey Devils, finishing in 1984.
