Gary Edwards

Gary Edwards (born October 5, 1947) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey goaltender who played in the National Hockey League from 1968 to 1982. Born in Toronto, Ontario, he was selected by the St. Louis Blues in the first round, sixth overall, of the 1968 NHL Amateur Draft.

Over a fourteen-year career, Edwards played for six teams. He began with the Blues from 1968–69 to 1969–70, then joined the Los Angeles Kings from 1971–72 to 1976–77. He went on to play for the Cleveland Barons/Minnesota North Stars from 1976–77 to 1979–80, the Edmonton Oilers in 1980–81, and the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1981–82 before returning to St. Louis for the 1981–82 season.

From 1972 to 1976, Edwards teamed with Rogatien Vachon to form one of the best goaltender tandems in the NHL. His best season came in 1974–75, when he posted a 2.34 goals-against average in 27 games while backing up Vachon. The pair were a close runner-up for the 1975 Vezina Trophy—at the time awarded to the goaltender or goaltenders of the team that allowed the fewest goals during the regular season—losing to Bernie Parent of the Stanley Cup champion Philadelphia Flyers by a mere four goals.
