Gary Simmons

Gary Simmons (born July 19, 1944) is a Canadian former ice hockey goaltender who played four seasons in the National Hockey League between 1974 and 1978. Over that span he tended goal for the California Seals, the Cleveland Barons, and the Los Angeles Kings.

A large, rangy goaltender, Simmons was known for roaming far from his crease to play the puck or cut off shooting angles — an aggressive style that produced either spectacular saves or embarrassing goals into an open net. He recorded a shutout in his first NHL game.

Simmons was nicknamed "the Cobra" and was recognized for his distinctive black goalie mask, which featured a large cobra reared in a strike position with its fangs bared.
