Gavvy Cravath

Clifford Carlton, known as "Cactus Gavvy", was born March 23, 1881 in Poway, California, and died May 23, 1963 in Laguna Beach, California. He made his major-league debut in 1908 and was associated chiefly with the Philadelphia Phillies, with his final big-league appearance coming in 1920, a span of 13 seasons. His broader professional career — including minor-league service — extended through 1922. He managed in the major leagues from 1919 through 1920. He was listed at 186 pounds, and batted and threw right-handed. He appears on the T206 White Border and E254 Colgan's Chips issues, two of the defining sets of the deadball era. He is buried at Melrose Abbey Cemetery in Anaheim, California.
