Gaye Stewart

James Gaye Stewart (1923–2010) was a left winger who played nine seasons in the National Hockey League, primarily with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Born in Fort William, Ontario, Stewart was called from the minors in 1942 to help Toronto win the Stanley Cup, then won the 1942–43 Calder Memorial Trophy—becoming the first player to claim a Stanley Cup before the Calder. After two years of service in the Royal Canadian Navy, he returned to lead the NHL with 37 goals in 1945–46 and won a second Stanley Cup with Toronto in 1947. He was later traded to Chicago, where he posted three 20-goal seasons for the Black Hawks.
