Eugene L. Mingo (born September 22, 1938) played halfback, placekicker, and return specialist in the American Football League and National Football League. After dropping out of high school, he joined the Navy, where he starred on a service team. Following his discharge he returned to Akron and worked at the Goodyear plant. Reading about the upcoming 1960 AFL inaugural season, he wrote a letter to the Denver Broncos and earned a contract. He is recognized as the first African American placekicker in professional football.
