George Reed

George Robert Reed (October 2, 1939 – October 1, 2023) was an American college football and Canadian Football League running back. Born in Vicksburg, Mississippi, he was the third of twelve children of Maggie and George Reed Sr. and grew up in Seattle, where his father worked in a steel factory during the Second World War. Reed played Pacific-8 Conference college football for the Washington State University Cougars from 1959 to 1962, alongside fellow Canadian Football Hall of Famer Hugh Campbell. He broke his leg in practice prior to the 1960 season but returned to the field.

Reed spent his entire 13-year professional career with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Along with Mike Pringle and Johnny Bright, he is among the players most often cited as the greatest running back in CFL history. In November 2006, the Canadian sports network TSN voted Reed the second-greatest CFL player of the league's modern era in its Top 50 ranking. His No. 34 is one of eight jerseys retired by the Roughriders, and he is a member of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame.
