George Stallings

George Tweedy Stallings (November 17, 1867 – May 13, 1929) was an American professional baseball player and manager. Born in Augusta, Georgia, he graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1886. His playing career was brief and undistinguished — seven major league games as a catcher, first baseman, and outfielder with the Brooklyn Bridegrooms and Philadelphia Phillies, batting .100 across 20 at-bats. Stallings found his footing as a manager, guiding the Philadelphia Phillies, Detroit Tigers, New York Highlanders, and Boston Braves. His defining moment came in 1914, when he led the last-place Braves to the National League pennant and a World Series sweep of the Philadelphia Athletics, earning him the lasting nickname "The Miracle Man."
