George Uhle

George Ernest Uhle (September 18, 1898 – February 26, 1985) was a right-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he spent the first decade of his career with his hometown Indians, leading the American League in wins, innings pitched, complete games, shutouts, and games started during that span. Traded to the Detroit Tigers in 1928, he later played for the New York Giants and New York Yankees before returning to Cleveland, finishing his career in 1936 with 200 wins. His lifetime batting average of .289 remains a record for a pitcher who never played another position. Babe Ruth, who hit only four home runs off Uhle in 714 career attempts, credited him as the toughest pitcher he ever faced.
