Dossier

Joseph Gerald George McNeil (April 17, 1926 – June 17, 2004) was a professional ice hockey goaltender who spent the core of his career with the Montreal Canadiens, winning three Stanley Cups with the club between 1947 and 1956. He first signed with Montreal in 1943 at age 17, developing with their farm team, the Montreal Royals of the Quebec Senior Hockey League, where he earned the Byng of Vimy Award as the league's most valuable player three times. Called up from the Cincinnati Mohawks in March 1950 to replace the injured Bill Durnan, McNeil posted a 1.50 goals-against average over six games.
