Dossier

Gilles Emile Meloche, born July 12, 1950, in Montreal, Quebec, is a Canadian professional ice hockey coach, scout, and former goaltender. He played junior hockey with the Verdun Maple Leafs and was loaned to the Quebec Remparts for the 1970 Memorial Cup. Chosen 70th overall by the Chicago Black Hawks in the 1970 amateur draft, Meloche spent his first professional season mostly with the Flint Generals of the International Hockey League, along with a two-game stint in Chicago. With the Black Hawks strong in goal behind Tony Esposito, Meloche was dealt to the California Golden Seals, one of the league's weakest teams. In his first season with the Seals in 1971–72, he posted a goals-against average of 3.33 with four shutouts, including one against the Boston Bruins.

Over his National Hockey League career, Meloche tended goal for the Chicago Black Hawks, California Golden Seals, Cleveland Barons, Minnesota North Stars, and Pittsburgh Penguins. After his playing days, he remained in the game as a coach and scout. He served as the Pittsburgh Penguins' longtime goaltending coach until 2013, a period during which the team won three Stanley Cups. He later became a special assignment scout for the Penguins.
