Glenn Hall

Glenn Henry Hall (October 3, 1931 – January 7, 2026) was a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender. Born in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, he was the second son of Henry and Agnes Hall; his father worked for Canadian National Railways as a train engineer and took on odd jobs through the Great Depression to support the family. Hall developed a slight speech impediment as he grew up. He began playing hockey as a forward but moved to goaltender at the peewee level after his team was left without one and no one else would take the position.

Hall's National Hockey League career ran from 1952 to 1971, spanning the Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Black Hawks, and St. Louis Blues. In 1956 he was awarded the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league's best rookie. He set a record by playing 502 consecutive games as a goaltender, won the Vezina Trophy three times, and was voted a first-team All-Star goaltender seven times. He won the Stanley Cup with the Black Hawks in 1961. Nicknamed "Mr. Goalie," Hall was the first goaltender to use the butterfly style. In 2017, he was named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in history.
