Gordie Howe

Gordie Howe card — 1948
1948

Dossier

Gordie Howe was an ice hockey player whose career spanned five decades and who was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame. He played alongside teammates including Red Kelly and Ted Lindsay, and the "Gordie Howe hat trick" — a goal, an assist, and a fight in the same game — was named in his honor by a 1950s New York sportswriter.

Howe himself recorded the feat only twice. The first came on October 11, 1953, when he scored a goal, assisted on Red Kelly's goal, and fought the Toronto Maple Leafs' Fernie Flaman. The second followed on March 21, 1954, again against the Maple Leafs, when he scored the opening goal, assisted on two Ted Lindsay goals, and fought Ted "Teeder" Kennedy. His son Marty Howe later remarked that the hat trick named for his father "should really be a goal, an assist and a cross-check to the face."
