Dossier

Gregory James Joly, a Canadian ice hockey player born May 30, 1954, played nine seasons in the National Hockey League for the Washington Capitals and Detroit Red Wings. After winning the 1974 Memorial Cup with the Regina Pats, he was selected first overall by the Washington Capitals in the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft, just a couple of days before his twentieth birthday. He was taken on May 28, 1974, the first of two Regina players chosen in the first round, with Clark Gillies going fourth overall to the Islanders. Washington general manager Milt Schmidt compared him to Bobby Orr, stating that "Joly can do a lot of the same incredible things that Bobby Orr does," and referred to him as "the next Bobby Orr."

Joly played for Washington from 1974 to 1976 and the Detroit Red Wings from 1976 to 1983. Over those nine seasons he spent parts of seven seasons on the American Hockey League farm teams of the two organizations. His first three NHL seasons were spent in last place, with the Capitals in 1974-75 and 1975-76 and the Red Wings in 1976-77. He won the 1981 Calder Cup with the AHL's Adirondack Red Wings.
