Dossier

Gus Triandos (July 30, 1930 – March 28, 2013) was an American professional baseball player and scout who appeared in Major League Baseball as a catcher and first baseman. Born in San Francisco, California, he attended Mission High School and was signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1948. He reached the Yankees' major league roster briefly as a 22-year-old in 1953 before being returned to the minor leagues in 1954.

Triandos was traded to the Baltimore Orioles in 1954, where he played mostly as a first baseman during his first two seasons before becoming the team's catcher. It was with Baltimore that he established himself, earning four All-Star selections. He also played for the Detroit Tigers in the American League and the Philadelphia Phillies and Houston Astros in the National League.

Triandos was the first catcher in MLB history to catch a no-hitter in both the American League and the National League. He caught Hoyt Wilhelm's no-hitter for the Orioles in the AL in 1958 and Jim Bunning's perfect game for the Phillies in the NL. In 1981, he was inducted into the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame.
