Guy Lapointe

Guy Gerard Lapointe (born March 18, 1948) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman who played in the National Hockey League for the Montreal Canadiens, St. Louis Blues, and Boston Bruins. Nicknamed "Pointu" — a play on his name, the French word carrying much the same sense as "sharp" or "pointy" in English — he was known for his powerful slapshot and brutal body-checks.

Alongside fellow defencemen Larry Robinson and Serge Savard, Lapointe formed the Canadiens' "Big Three" and played a key role in six Stanley Cup championships, won in 1971, 1973, 1976, 1977, 1978, and 1979. He was traded to the St. Louis Blues in 1982 and signed with the Boston Bruins the following season, retiring in 1984 after a series of injuries.

Over 884 NHL games, Lapointe recorded 171 goals and 451 assists for 622 points. He still holds the Montreal Canadiens' record for most goals in a season by a defenceman, with 28, as well as the franchise mark for most goals by a rookie defenceman, with 15. His number 5 was retired by the club.

Lapointe was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1993. He later served as Coordinator of Amateur Scouting with the Minnesota Wild for 20 years, retiring in 2020.
