Harry Gilmer

Dossier
Harry Vincent Gilmer Jr. (1926–2016) played halfback and quarterback in the NFL for the Washington Redskins and Detroit Lions. He developed his signature "jump pass" — leaping into the air to throw — while playing pickup games as a child against older, taller players, and helped popularize the technique at the college level. At the University of Alabama, where he played left halfback from 1944 to 1947, Gilmer went 8-for-8 passing in the Sugar Bowl as a freshman and led the nation with 13 touchdown passes in his sophomore season. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1993.
