"Hooley" Smith

Reginald Joseph "Hooley" Smith (January 7, 1903 – August 24, 1963) was a Canadian professional ice hockey forward who played between 1924 and 1941. Born in Toronto, Ontario, he played amateur hockey for the Toronto Granites, who won the Allan Cup and represented Canada at the 1924 Winter Olympics, where they captured the gold medal. Smith had an outstanding Olympic tournament, scoring 17 goals and 33 points in five games.

He began his professional career the following winter with the "Super Six" of the Ottawa Senators. In his first season with Ottawa he suffered a head injury, and upon returning to play he wore a jockey-type helmet to protect his head. In 1926–27, Ottawa won the Stanley Cup against Boston, the last game Smith played with the club. After attacking Harry Oliver in the final game of that series, he was suspended for a month of the following season.

Over his career Smith played for the Ottawa Senators, Montreal Maroons, Boston Bruins and New York Americans. He won the Stanley Cup twice, once with Ottawa and once with Montreal, adding to the Olympic gold medal he had earned with the Canada national team before turning professional.
