Dossier

Hugh Duffy (1866–1954) packed nineteen big-league seasons into a 5'7", 168-pound frame and turned a quarter-century of dugout work on top of that. Born November 26, 1866 in Cranston, Rhode Island, he debuted in 1888 and played in the majors through 1906, with professional ball stretching to 1908 and his managing career running from 1901 all the way to 1922. The right-handed hitter and thrower is listed in our records under the Chicago White Sox banner — the American League club he piloted late in his career — but his playing prime had been spent across the National League and the upstart Players' League. By the 1909 caramel-and-tobacco boom, Duffy was already transitioning into elder-statesman status: he appears on the E90-1 American Caramel set and the T206 White Border, the two marquee issues of the era, both treating him as a player-manager fixture worth a card slot even at age 42. He stayed in baseball as a manager, scout, and instructor for decades after the bat came out of his hands. Duffy died October 19, 1954 in Boston, Massachusetts and is buried at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Roslindale, Massachusetts — Maple Avenue, Section 3-1/2, Lot 45. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1945 on the strength of his nineteenth-century batting exploits and a long second life in uniform.
