Dossier

Hugh Ambrose "Ee-Yah" Jennings (1869–1928) earned his nickname from the howling, arm-waving coaching routine he ran from the third-base box as Detroit's manager. Born April 2, 1869 in Pittston, Pennsylvania, he debuted in 1891 and played seventeen seasons through 1918, with the bulk of his star turn coming as the shortstop on the rough Baltimore Orioles dynasty of the mid-1890s. As a hitter he ground out the 1896 batting title at .401 and was famous for crowding the plate — he was hit by pitches more often than anyone of his era. Jennings turned to managing in 1907 and ran the Detroit Tigers through 1920, taking Ty Cobb's clubs to three straight pennants from 1907 through 1909, with a final managerial stint that ended in 1925. The 5'8–11" right-hander, listed at 165 pounds, has only thin tobacco-era card presence among the surviving issues; he appears on E92 Croft's Candy, with the better-known H. Jennings T206 White Border portrait carrying his late-career image. He died February 1, 1928 in Scranton and is buried in Section C of St. Catherine's Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania. The Hall of Fame elected him in 1945.
