Jack Coombs

John Wesley "Colby Jack" Coombs (November 18, 1882 – April 15, 1957) was born in Le Grand, Iowa. He put together 15 seasons in the majors, his service running from 1906 through 1920, and the Philadelphia Athletics of the American League stand as the club he is most identified with. His full professional career, counting minor-league campaigns, ran 16 years from 1905 to 1920. He also took the reins as a major-league manager during the 1919 season. He was listed at 6'0" and 185 pounds, and he was a switch-hitter and threw right-handed. For collectors, his vintage cardboard footprint is anchored by an appearance in the T204 Ramly set, the survey most often consulted when his image is the target. That single-issue presence narrows the chase but also keeps demand concentrated on a known card. He was 74 years of age at the time of his death. He was roughly 24 years old at the time of his major-league debut. He died in Palestine, Texas. He was laid to rest at St. Joseph Cemetery in Palestine, Texas.
