Dossier
Arthur John Smiley (1922–2000) was a guard from Waterman, Illinois who played college basketball at the University of Illinois alongside Gene Vance, Andy Phillip, Ken Menke, and Art Mathisen on the "Whiz Kids" team that went 35–6 across 1941–1943 and won two Big Ten Conference championships. The team declined a 1943 NCAA tournament invitation after Smiley, Vance, and Phillip entered military service. He returned to Illinois for 1946–47 and won team MVP, then played two NBA seasons with Fort Wayne, Anderson, and Waterloo, averaging 6.2 points per game and serving as Waterloo's player-coach in 1949–50.
