Dossier

John Kennedy Twyman (May 21, 1934 – May 30, 2012) was an American professional basketball player and sports broadcaster. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he attended Central Catholic High School, where he was cut from the team three times before earning a roster spot. He practiced daily, shooting 100 foul shots, 200 jump shots, and 100 to 150 set shots, and made the team as a senior, earning All-State honors.

Twyman attended the University of Cincinnati, where he earned a degree in elementary education and averaged 24.6 points and 16.5 rebounds over his Bearcat career. He led Cincinnati to a third-place finish in the 1955 National Invitation Tournament. The university later retired his number 27.

Twyman went on to a professional career with the Rochester and Cincinnati franchise. During his playing days, he served as a caregiver for his disabled teammate Maurice Stokes; the two are the namesakes of the NBA's Twyman–Stokes Teammate of the Year Award. Twyman also worked as a sports broadcaster. He was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1983.
