Dossier

Joseph Jacques Hughes Laperrière (born November 22, 1941) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman and coach who played for the Montreal Canadiens in the National Hockey League from 1962 to 1974. Born in Béarn, Quebec, Laperrière grew up idolizing the Montreal Canadiens, with fellow defenceman Doug Harvey as his favourite player. He spent his junior career with the Hull-Ottawa Canadiens, the Montreal Junior Canadiens, and the Brockville Jr. Canadiens.

Laperrière made his NHL debut in 1962–63 with Montreal, appearing in six regular-season games and five more in the playoffs against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The following season he secured a full-time roster spot, recording 30 points and 102 penalty minutes as a rookie while making few defensive errors. He won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL's top rookie. Over his career he won six Stanley Cups with the Canadiens.

After his playing days, Laperrière turned to coaching, serving on two Stanley Cup-winning staffs. He is the father of NHL player Daniel Laperrière and AHL coach Martin Laperrière. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
