Jan van Breda Kolff

Jan van Breda Kolff (born December 16, 1951) is an American former professional basketball player and college coach. The son of coach Butch van Breda Kolff and grandson of Dutch soccer player Jan van Breda Kolff, he played college basketball at Vanderbilt University from 1970 to 1974, leading the Commodores to a Southeastern Conference championship in 1974 and earning SEC Player of the Year honors.

From 1974 to 1976 he played in the American Basketball Association for the Denver Nuggets, Kentucky Colonels, and Virginia Squires. He then spent 1976 to 1983 in the National Basketball Association with the New York/New Jersey Nets. From 1983 to 1985 he played two seasons in Italy, where he served as a player-coach and helped Virtus Bologna win a championship.

Van Breda Kolff moved into coaching after his playing career, becoming an assistant coach at Princeton in the mid-1980s. He began his head coaching career in 1991 at Cornell University, compiling a 23–29 record over two years. In 1993 he was hired by his alma mater, Vanderbilt University, where his teams achieved a 104–81 record over six seasons and finished between third and fifth place in the Southeastern Conference.
