Jean Beliveau

Joseph Arthur Jean Béliveau (August 31, 1931 – December 2, 2014) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player who spent parts of 20 seasons with the National Hockey League's Montreal Canadiens between 1950 and 1971. Born in Trois-Rivières, Quebec, and nicknamed "Le Gros Bill," he first played professionally in the Quebec Major Hockey League. Béliveau made his NHL debut with the Canadiens in 1950 but chose to remain in the QMHL full-time until 1953, after which he spent his entire NHL career in Montreal.

By his second NHL season, Béliveau ranked among the top three scorers. He became the fourth player to reach 500 goals and the second to record 1,000 points. He won two Hart Memorial Trophies as league most valuable player, in 1956 and 1964, and the Art Ross Trophy as the top scorer in 1956. In 1965 he received the inaugural Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff most valuable player.

After retiring as a player in 1971, Béliveau joined the franchise as an executive for an additional twenty-two seasons. Between 1950 and 1993 he won a combined total of 17 Stanley Cup championships, ten of them as a player. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972.
