Jerry Keeling

Jerry Keeling (August 2, 1939 – January 20, 2018) was an American professional football quarterback and defensive back who played fifteen seasons in the Canadian Football League from 1961 to 1975. Born in Paris, Texas, and raised in Enid, Oklahoma, he spent his first eleven seasons with the Calgary Stampeders, from 1961 to 1972, filling both defensive back and quarterback roles. He did not become the team's starting quarterback until 1969.

As Calgary's starter, Keeling led the Stampeders to the 1970 Western Conference finals, a best-of-three series against the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He was the winning quarterback in the deciding game, played in brutal cold and won 15–14, among the coldest football games ever contested. Calgary advanced to the 58th Grey Cup but lost on a muddy field to the Montreal Alouettes. The following year, Keeling again defeated Saskatchewan in the Western Conference finals and then beat the Toronto Argonauts in the rain-soaked 59th Grey Cup, securing his first championship.

After Calgary, Keeling went on to play for the Ottawa Rough Riders and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats before retiring in 1975. He was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1989.
