Dossier

Gerald J. "Jerry" Tubbs (January 23, 1935 – June 13, 2012) was an American professional football linebacker who played in the National Football League for the San Francisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys. He played his college football at the University of Oklahoma, where he accepted a scholarship and earned three varsity years contributing to the Sooners.

Before college, Tubbs attended Breckenridge High School, where he was an honor graduate and played center. He was part of two Texas state championship teams, in 1951 and 1952, under coaches Cooper Robbins and Joe Kerbel, and lost only three games during his high school career. He played in three high school All-Star games and was a unanimous Texas All-State selection in 1952.

Tubbs was selected by the Chicago Cardinals in the first round, tenth overall, of the 1957 NFL draft. He went on to play linebacker for the San Francisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys. After his retirement as a player, he remained with the Cowboys as an assistant coach for 22 years.

In 1971, Tubbs was inducted into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame. Since 2008, the Breckenridge Buckaroos have opened their football season with the "Jerry Tubbs Kickoff Classic," named in his honor.
