Dossier

James LeRoy Bakken (born November 2, 1940) was an American professional football player who served as a kicker in the National Football League for the St. Louis Cardinals, occasionally appearing as a punter as well. Born in Madison, Wisconsin, he attended Madison West High School, graduating in 1958, where he played football, basketball, and baseball. The 1957 football team went undefeated at 8–0 and was regarded as the best high school team in Wisconsin that year; Bakken was named Most Valuable Player of the Big 8 Conference and All-State quarterback, and earned All-State honors in baseball and basketball as well.

Bakken went on to play three seasons of varsity football at the University of Wisconsin from 1959 to 1961, under coach Milt Bruhn. As a sophomore he shared the quarterback position with Dale Hackbart while also serving as the team's kicker and punter.

In the NFL, Bakken was a four-time Pro Bowl selection. He was named to both the NFL 1960s and 1970s All-Decade Teams, making him one of only 29 individuals to be named to two All-Decade teams.
