Jim McMillian

James M. McMillian (March 11, 1948 – May 16, 2016) was an American professional basketball player. After starring at Thomas Jefferson High School in Brooklyn, he played college basketball for the Columbia Lions, where he led the team to a three-year record of 63–14 and its last NCAA Tournament appearance in 1968, his sophomore year. That tournament ended with a third-place finish for Columbia in the East regional, and the Lions closed the 1967–68 season ranked sixth in the nation.

Known as "Jimmy Mac," McMillian was a three-time All-American and All-Ivy Leaguer, was named All-East in each of his three varsity seasons, and was the ECAC Sophomore of the Year. He became the first person to earn the Haggerty Award in each of his three varsity seasons. He scored 1,758 career points, then a record and now second, and averaged 22.9 points per game, the second-best mark both then and now. He also ranks second in career rebounds with 743 and holds the season record for field goals in a season (253) and in a career (677). Despite their strong winning percentages, his Columbia teams managed only one Ivy League title.

As a professional, McMillian is known for executing a reverse behind-the-back layup in the 1972 NBA Finals, winning the 1972 championship.
