James Ray Smith (born February 27, 1932) played offensive guard in the NFL for nine seasons, splitting his career between the Cleveland Browns and the Dallas Cowboys. He played college football at Baylor University, where he was a two-way tackle and three-year starter. Selected by Cleveland in the sixth round of the 1954 NFL Draft as a future pick, his rookie season was delayed by 23 months of U.S. Army service, beginning in November 1956. Smith was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1987 and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.
